Since 1907, the Baden State Railways had operated the type IV f Pacific built by Maffei in Munich. Similar to the Bavarian S 3/6 that was built on the basis of this, they had drivers of only 1,800 mm (71 inches) what limited the sustained top speed on level lines. To solve that problem, they ordered the more modern IV h from Maffei in 1915 that sill had a four-cylinder compound engine, but drivers of 2,100 mm (82 2/3 inches). In trial runs in the thirties, they were able to reach 155 km/h (96 mph). After some modifications to the brakes, they were approved for 140 instead of 110 km/h.
