Nickel Plate Road class N-1

The ten members of the class N-1 were built in the time when Brooks became part of ALCO. They had been ordered by John McKenzie as Consolidations for use in fast freight service. For this, they were equipped with 62-inch drivers. The cylinders measured 19 by 28 inches and had slide valves which were controlled by inside Stephenson link motion. The saturated boiler was mounted in a high pitched position and had a firebox with 136.5 square feet of direct heating surface plus 23.8 square feet in arch tubes. In contrast to their successor Consolidations they were never superheated, but rebuilt to 0-6-0 switchers and scrapped in 1934.
