New York, Ontario & Western class U
United States 1901 17 produced
The NYO&W was the most important milk hauler for New York City, but also had to haul heavy passenger traffic in the summer months. These 17 anthracite-burning camelback Moguls were built between 1901 and 1905 to haul both types of trains. They had drivers with a diameter of 69 inches, but no two-axle leading truck. As early as 1902, the first two class members, numbered 143 and 144, collided while in milk train service. From 1916, nine were rebuilt to class U-1 ten-wheelers. This did not only improve their running characteristics at speed, but also allowed to install a larger boiler. These, like the other eight, were now superheated. In the same process, their Stephenson valve gear was replaced by the Baker type.
