The ВЛ82 (VL82) is an eight-axle two-section locomotive for freight service under 3 kV DC and 25 kV AC. It was based on the AC-only ВЛ80c, but additionally had the equipment to run under DC. So it was also related to the ВЛ10 that was only equipped for running under DC. While more than 6,800 of the single-system variants were built, the dual-system ВЛ82 only numbered 91. 69 of these built from 1972 were of the modernized ВЛ82М variant. This had more modern traction motors with more power, upgrades in the electrical part and were heavier. These, with an axle load of 25 tonnes, could not be operated on all lines.
