Swiss Federal Railways Am 841
The Am 841 is a class of 40 four-axle diesel locomotives built by GEC Alstom at Valencia for the SBB. They were based on the RENFE class 311, but built for standard gauge and are powered by a more modern variant of the MTU V8 engine with 920 kW. Power is being transmitted electrically to three-phase AC traction motors. The manufacturer designates these locomotives type GA-DE 900/AS and started production of 30 in 1996, followed by ten more.
28 of the 40 locomotives are assigned to the infrastructure division of the SBB and are being used for heavy construction trains. Twelve belong to SBB Cargo and are being used for light freight trains over short distances with non-electrified sections. In 2024 Müller Frauenfeld presented the first rebuilt Aeam 841 “Tribrid” locomotive with an additional pantograph and batteries.
