The CRH380D is a variant of the Bombardier Zefiro family that was designed for a maximum speed of 380 km/h and for 350 km/h in service. It was not directly derived from the CRH1A and CRH1B which also belong to the Zefiro family. Each set consists of eight cars, four of which are powered. A 16-car variant was cancelled in an early stage, but two 8-car sets can be coupled to create the same capacity. Between 2010 and 2016, Bombardier Sifang built 85 sets.
