Swiss Federal Railways E 3/3 “Tigerli”

Starting in 1896, the Swiss Central Railway (SCB) got 25 0-6-0T tank locomotives for shunting. 16 more were ordered by the Jura-Simplon Railway. They had outside cylinders, outside valve gear and the water tank was located below the boiler. After the SBB had taken over the SCB and the JS, they built 83 more with minor alterations. Now they were designated E 3/3 and called “Tigerli”.

In World War II when the procurement of coal was difficult for Switzerland, two were fitted with a pantograph and electric boiler heating. After the war, five were sold to the Netherlands and became NS series 7800. In 1947, five more were sold to Norway and became NSB type 25e. In Switzerland, many were scrapped in the years following the war, but the last ones were still used as shunters in the sixties. Many were preserved and can now be found at several owners, with a grater number still in working order.
