The Euro 4000 was designed around 2004 when the factory at Valencia was still owned by Alstom. Production only started after Vossloh had acquired the factory and continued until 2017 under Stadler ownership. It is a six-axle diesel locomotive with prime mover, generator and traction motors by EMD. Separate variants for freight and passenger service were offered with a top speed of 120 or 160 km/h. The Euro 4000 is being used on standard-gauge lines in several European countries and in Israel, as well as on broad-gauge lines on the Iberian Peninsula. Its sisters are the Euro 3000 and the Afro 4000.
