The WL was a broad-gauge Pacific express locomotive, essentially designed as a lighter variant of the WP. The maximum axle load was 17 instead of 18 1/2 tons and the cylinders had a diameter of 19 1/4 inches, one inch smaller than the WP. The first ten were built in England by Vulcan Foundry in 1955. It took eleven years until production of 94 more locomotives started at Chittaranjan Locomotive Works in India. After production ended in 1969, many stayed in service until the nineties. The last run of a WL was also the last run of a broad gauge steam locomotive in India. It was done by 15005 “Sher-e-Punjab” on December 6, 1995.
