Madrid-Saragossa & Alicante No. 651 to 680 and 801 to 875
Spanish State Railways 230.4001 to 4105
The MZA operated a total of 105 4-6-0 locomotives for express service which had been built between 1901 and 1911 by German companies. These were four-cylinder compounds with outside high pressure cylinders behind the rear axle of the bogie. The drivers measured a diameter of only 1,750 mm to ensure a high tractive effort, but they still allowed for a top speed of 115 km/h. The first 15, numbered 651 to 665 came from Hanomag in 1901. Henschel delivered 15 more in 1903 which became 666 to 680. All these had three-axle tenders which carried four tonnes of coal and 17 cubic metres of water.
A somewhat heavier variant was introduced in 1905 that was coupled to a four-axle bogie tender with five tonnes and 20 cubic metres. Henschel had built 55 by 1910 which got the numbers 801 to 855. Ten each were provided by Maffei and Hanomag in 1911. In the same year, the Duke of Zaragoza piloted a locomotive of this type between San Sebastián and Madrid and made up a delay of two hours.
Numbers 871 and 874 were superheated in the twenties. With the founding of RENFE, they became 230.4001 to 230.4105. The last ones were withdrawn in 1967. The first locomotive ever built by Hanomag, No. 651 and later 230.4001, is now on display in the museum at Vilanova i la Geltrú. No. 852 or 230.4082 built by Henschel in 1910 can be found in the museum at Madrid Delicias.
