Imperial Russian Railways Series Я (Ya)
When the suburban trains became heavier in Russia, the Moscow-Yaroslavl Railway was the first to order six-coupled locomotives for this task. The series was designated Я (Ya) after the terminus of the first customer. With the 2-6-0 wheel arrangement, they could be considerably more powerful than the previous 2-4-0 locomotives. Based on the two-cylinder compound series Н (N), the new type was designed as a two-cylinder simple, as compound locomotives were not efficient enough on suburban lines with short distances between stops. Compared to their basis, the driver diameter had been decreased from 1,900 to 1,800 mm to be better suited for the lower speeds. After the Yaroslavl Railway, six others also ordered this type so that production ran from 1896 to 1903. 26 from a total of 150 locomotives had been built by Putilov and the rest by Nevski.
