Soviet Railways series ТЭП60 (TEP60)

The ТЭП60 (TEP60) was a six-axle diesel locomotive for express trains on non-electrified main lines. After a prototype that was tested in 1960, production of 1,240 locomotives went from 1961 to 1985 at Kolomna. Power came from a 16-cylinder two-stroke engine with both Roots blower and turbocharger, delivering 3,000 hp. The traction motors came from the ТЭ10, but were spring-mounted to allow for a speed of 160 km/h. On test runs, one locomotive even reached 193 km/h.

Additionally to the standard variant, a total of 116 two-section 2ТЭП60 were built between 1964 and 1987. Most ТЭП60 were used in the Baltic region. Withdrawals in greater numbers started in the nineties and in 2009, the last one in Russia was gone. In Belarus, service continued until 2019.
