Cass Scenic No. 5 and Shay C-80-3

The locomotive today known as Cass Scenic Railroad No. 5 was built in 1905 for the West Virginia Pulp & Paper Co. and used on the Greenbrier and Elk River Railroad. It was an 80-ton three-truck shay and carried works number 1503. In 1942 it came to the Mower Lumber Co., that was also located at Cass like its first owner. There it was used until 1960 when it was sold to a scrap dealer, who still let this locomotive rest at its home town. It took only two years until this locomotive came to the Cass Scenic Railroad and was restored to working condition. Today it still carries the number 5. In 2002 it was joined by No. 3, another C-80-3 Shay that was built in 1920. It carried the works number 3142 and its first operator was the Eastern Railway & Lumber Co. of Centralia, Washington.
