Five years after its opening, the Sfax-Gafsa phosphate railway, with full name Compagnie des phosphates et des chemins de fer de Gafsa, received five Consolidations built by SACM at Belfort to increase its hauling capacity. The works numbers were 5458 to 5463, 5479 and 5480. These had a Belpaire firebox, inside frames, outside cylinders and a classic cab that was open at the back. Although only metre-gauge, they had enough power with drivers of only 1.100 mm (43.3 inches) and cylinders of 430 by 560 mm (17 by 22 inches).
