Hungarian State Railways series V46

For a more economical shunting service in stations where the tracks were electrified, the MÁV decided to order an electric shunter in the early eighties. This type originally designated V46 has four axles, a central cab with pantograph on the roof, thyristor control and an output of 800 kW. Between 1983 and 1991, Ganz-MÁVAG built 60 which are spending most of their time in stations and yards. They are not able to provide power to passenger trains, but with a top speed of 80 km/h they are sometimes used for light short-distance freight trains. Their most popular nick name is “Szöcske”, what means “grasshopper”. In 2011, they became series 460, but many were withdrawn from active service in the same year.
