Bavarian E I (Vauclain)

Among the Consolidations of the type E I operated by the Bavarian State Railways were two four-cylinder Vauclain Compounds built by Baldwin in 1899, followed by the two S 2/5 Atlantics. The two E I were the first locomotives in Germany to have bar frames. This type of frames was quickly adopted by south German manufacturers and later also found its way into the standard locomotives of the Reichsbahn. The Vauclain drive combined the high pressure cylinders at the bottom and the low pressure cylinders at the top, which acted on common crossheads. Instead of this system, the German builders chose the Von Borries system. The iron fireboxes of the two E I were later replaced by copper. One of them went to France a war reparation and became Number 140-906 of the État.
