One part of a huge contract from Transnet Freight Rail for the construction of 1,064 modern locomotives is the class 23E electric locomotive. Designed by Bombardier as part of the TRAXX family, 240 were built in South Africa starting in 2017. Their bogies are similar to those of the IORE locomotives. They only have one cab and are designed for operation either under 25 kV AC or 3 kV DC. They are only used on the manganese ore line between Hotazel and Port Elizabeth, which uses both power systems on different sections of the route.
