One part of a huge contract from Transnet Freight Rail for the construction of 1,064 modern locomotives is the class 45-000 diesel locomotive. In 2015, 232 of these were ordered from the Chinese CRRC to be built by in South Africa. They are of the road switcher design and feature the most powerful rail engines of MTU. These deliver 3,300 kW (4,425 hp) and are built in Germany. The first locomotive was rolled out in 2017 and in 2019, production was completed.
