The reference for locomotives and railcars

State Railway Company No. 200 “Combermere”

Austria 1884
Die Lokomotive, March 1916

In 1884, the StEG ordered a 2-2-2-0 Webb compound from Sharp, Stewart & Co. that was the first locomotive in Austria built as a compound from the start. It was designed on the basis of the LNWR Experiment class without coupled axles.  Like its prototype, it had two small high pressure cylinders mounted on the outside behind the leading axle  which drove the rear driving axle.  The large low pressure cylinder was mounted on the inside above the leading axle  and drove the first driving axle.  The leading axle  was mounted radially adjustable.

It originally carried the number 161 and was name “Combermere”. Only one year after its delivery, it was renumbered to 208 and again one year later, it got the number 200 that it carried for the largest part of its career. Like its prototype, it tended to slip due to the missing coupling rods.  Additionally, it was found out that the grate  was to small, so it frequently ran out of steam. In 1897, it became class 205 and was thus numbered 2051. This single locomotive was finally withdrawn in 1902 and scrapped two years later.
