Southern State Railway “Cittanova” to “Pottenstein”

In 1856, Wiener Neustadt built nine 0-4-6T Engerth locomotives for the SStB which were intended für the mountainous lines in the Karst. With only 1,422 mm, their drivers were much smaller than those of the previous locomotives of this wheel arrangement. Additionally, they were the only ones with outside cylinders. The valve gear was of the Stephenson type and mounted on the inside. Usually used in passenger service, they could haul 75 tonnes on an incline of 1.4 percent with sufficient speed. In freight service, maximum train weight was 130 tonnes. Their names were “Cittanova”, “Illyrien”, “Veldes”, “Miramare”, “Ödenburg”, “Dornau”, “Sauerbrunn II” (later “Küstenland”), “Ternitz” and “Pottenstein”. When the SStB was privatized in 1858, these locomotives became Südbahn class 1 and carried the numbers 201 to 209. They were withdrawn between 1864 and 1867.
