The D IIII was a three-axle tank locomotive for shunting that was introduced after the withdrawals of the last D II used in local service. Between 1898 and 1904, Krauss and Maffei built a total of 73. A prominent feature of these locomotives that can also be seen in the photo is a coal bunker in front of the left side of the cab. Like the similar locomotives built from 1906, they later got the designation R 3/3. Three came to Poland after World War I and became the TKh101. The remaining 70 locomotives became Reichsbahn class 896. Most survived World War II and came to the Bundesbahn, where the last one was withdrawn in 1960.
