The T 212.0 was a small two-axle shunter for work in stations, depots and works railways. It was directly developed from the T 211.0, but had a new Tatra 930.51 V12 engine with 200 instead of 165 hp. This engine was later also used to rebuild the existing T 211.0 locomotives. The gearbox was still of the Mylius type like in its predecessor. Some were later rebuilt to 760 mm or 1,000 mm narrow gauge and designated TU 29.1. From 1988, the standard gauge locomotives became class 702 and the narrow gauge ones became class 702.9. Additional locomotives were exported to the GDR, China, Bulgaria, Egypt, USSR, Poland, Romania, Albania, Iraq, India and Hungary.
