As its name suggests, the Modula is a type of locomotive that can be configured with several different types of traction equipment. Its concept was presented by Vossloh in 2018 as “DM 20” and the first prototype was unveiled in 2022. It had four axles and a large cab that sat between a very long and a very short hood. Depending on configuration, the locomotive weighs between 84 and 90 tonnes.

One variant is the Modula EBB that combines the ability to run under overhead lines with two batteries with a total capacity of 350 kWh. It delivers 2,500 kW under AC, 1,500 kW under DC and 500 kW when running on batteries. The EDD can only be used under AC overhead line and has two 480 kW MAN diesel engines instead of the batteries. The third variant currently on offer is the BDD that can be called a plug-in hybrid. It combines two of the same diesel engines with a single 160 kWh last-mile battery. On battery power it delivers 300 kW. A fourth variant currently under development is the BFC with a hydrogen fuel cell and a 160 kWh battery for shunting.

Although entry into service was originally planned for 2024, there were lengthy delays. As of 2026, several locomotives are in the testing and certification process. In Germany, they will be called classes 1020 and 1120. By now, a low three-digit number has been ordered with a larger number of options. Customers include DB Cargo, Paribus and Railpool.
