In the 1990s, Clyde Engineering developed the GT46C heavy freight locomotive using prime mover, generator and traction motors from EMD. 24 of these were built, which were only delivered after Clyde Engineering had been bought by EDi Rail. Since the installation of three-phase traction equipment would have exceeded the permitted weight, the newly developed GT46C ACe was introduced in 2007. This uses traction motors from Siemens and electronics from Mitsubishi, among others. Thanks to the three-phase AC technology and a slightly more powerful prime mover, the starting tractive effort increased from 408 to 600 kN. By 2023, 94 locomotives have already been delivered and there are already orders for 36 more. Some of the production is carried out in the USA by EMD (today Progress Rail). Aurizon is a major operator of both generations and Pacific National operates a total of 40 GT46C ACe locomotives.

In 2023, NRE manufactured a total of five six-axle freight locomotives for the Australian railway company “El Zorro”. These each have six overhauled D78 traction motors from EMD, which are powered by three Cummins QSK19C, each with around 750 hp. When the first two locomotives were on their way to Australia, El Zorro was liquidated. These two were sold to Bowmans Rail after interim storage at Port Kembla. One of the three locomotives remaining in the USA was delivered to Caraminer S.A. in Uruguay in 2021.

In 1969, the New South Wales government initially ordered 20 diesel-hydraulic shunters, which were soon supplemented by 30 more. The engine came from Caterpillar and the transmission from Voith. They were used almost all over the state and replaced all remaining steam locomotives in shunting service. They were able to prove on several occasions that, unlike diesel-electric locomotives, they could also run on flooded tracks. Due to a lack of demand, they were phased out in 1987 and by 1991 almost all of them had either been handed over to private companies or museum railways.

The Victorian Railways class W consisted of 25 shunters built by Tulloch in New South Wales in 1959. They were based on the German V 60 and had a 650 hp V12 diesel from Mercedes, which transmitted its power via a hydraulic transmission from Krupp. Only one axle was driven directly, the other two were connected to it via coupling rods

They were unpopular with the staff and were rebuilt several times. First, the second set of controls was removed in both directions and soon the fast gear was removed, reducing the top speed from 40 to 20 mph. Now they were only used in shunting duties. From 1973 the Mercedes engines were replaced by the Detroit Diesel 12V-149.

Tulloch had built a standard gauge locomotive in the hope of selling this type to the NSWGR. It bore the number 7101 and thus formed class 71. However, the NSWGR sold it to the VR, which used it on the construction site of a standard gauge line. Tulloch had also built a standard-gauge locomotive directly for the VR, but no further orders were placed. This was now used in the same area as the former 7101.
