The Tkt48 was a 2-8-2T tank locomotive designed for suburban and freight service starting in 1948. It was based on a non-implemented design from Linke-Hofmann of Wrocław. Its German influence could be seen in the shape of the cab and coal bunker, but at the front it had smoke deflectors of typical Polish design. In passenger service, it could haul 515 tonnes at 80 km/h on the level and 155 tonnes at 50 km/h on two percent inclines. In freight service, it could haul 1,050 tonnes at 60 km/h.
In total, Fablok and Cegielski produced 191 for the PKP and 18 for the industry. Six were sold to Albania and used on the country's first standard gauge line. Soon, the PKP mostly used the Tkt48 in the mountains where a tank locomotive was suited thanks to the same top speed when running in both directions. Many were only retired after 1989 when secondary lines in the mountains were closed. Today 14 are preserved with some in operational condition.
