When the Pt 2/3 was designed, it was not clear whether its rigid 2-4-0 wheel arrangement was suitable for branch lines with sharp curves. So for comparison, two locomotives were built which had a two-axle bogie instead of the rigid leading axle. As there was already a superheated passenger tank locomotive with four axles of which two were powered, the new saturated locomotive was called Pt 2/4 N. Since the more complex design with the bogie did not have many advantages, the cheaper Pt 2/3 was bought in greater Numbers. The two Pt 2/4 N were later taken over by the Reichsbahn as 72 101 and 72 102 and withdrawn in 1928.
