From 1982, MaK offered the DE 1002 as a diesel-electric shunting locomotive. Depending on requirements, it was available with a service weight of between 80 and 100 tonnes and could be supplied with two different engines. 16 locomotives were bought by the Cologne-Bonn Railways and their successor HGK. These have a 1,320 kW engine from the Motorenwerke Mannheim. Another eight locomotives were bought by a total of six customers with a 1,120 kW MTU engine. The Dutch State Railways had the series 6400 developed from the DE 1002.
