Lens of Sutton

No. 1831 was the first diesel shunter in the UK. It was rebuilt in 1931 from a 39 year old 0-6-0T of the class 1377. The running gear of the steam locomotive was retained and mated to a boxcab-style locomotive body that housed all equipment and cabs. Power came from a 400 hp six-cylinder Davey Paxman that transmitted its power through a hydraulic Haslam & Newton transmission onto a crank axle and coupling rods. After testing the locomotive was put into regular shunting service in 1934, but went into storage in 1936. Later it was rebuilt into the mobile power unit MPU3 with its output reduced to 300 hp. After serving this task it was scrapped in 1951.
