The Ober-Grafendorf-Gresten local railway, also known as “Krumpe”, was a branch line of the Mariazell railway. For more efficient operation, the BBÖ ordered two small diesel locomotives from Simmering, which they delivered in 1934. In contrast to most locomotives of this size class, the power transmission was electrical, with the electrical part of the locomotives coming from the Siemens-Schuckert works. Two years later, a third locomotive was procured, which had a slightly more powerful motor.

The locomotives were mainly used to pull passenger trains. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, the three locomotives were run by the Reichsbahn as road numbers V 15 901 to 903. From 1953 they became class 2190 at ÖBB. The first two engines were retired in 1981 and 1983. The 01 was made operational again with parts of the 02 and has been running on the Ybbstalbahn since 1991. After it ran off on the mountain in 2018 and derailed, it is waiting for its repair. The 03 was decommissioned in 1969 due to its condition, but was put back into service in 1974 after being refurbished. It got a new motor in 1992, for which it is easier to obtain spare parts, and it still serves as a shunting locomotive in St. Pölten today.

To replace steam locomotives, the ÖBB had the diesel-hydraulic classes 2043 and 2143 developed. They were mainly intended for use on branch lines, as all main lines were to be electrified. The 2043 was created at Jenbacher with their own twelve-cylinder two-stroke diesel with 1,500 hp. To supply passenger cars, this was supported by an additional eight-cylinder two-stroke diesel, while a small two-cylinder was used for starting.

As long as not all main lines were electrified, the class 2043 was also used in heavy service there. Four locomotives were equipped with a magnetic rail brake for use on steep lines and were designated as class 2043.5. With the introduction of the class 2016 from 2002, they were at first pushed out of passenger service and increasingly used in shunting services. At ÖBB, the last one disappeared from active service in 2020 and some were handed over to new owners for further preservation.

Since the existing two-axle light shunting locomotives with outputs of 200 and 400 hp were too weak for many tasks, the ÖBB had the three-axle class 2067 with 600 hp developed. It was based on the LDH 420, which was used by industrial companies and, in contrast to this, got a turbocharger. In addition to the 111 built locomotives of the class 2067, an LDH 420 of the Liesing siding was converted into the same form. The locomotives were used for various shunting services and also for local freight trains. The first ones were retired in 2001, but there are still a few in use today. Today, however, these are only used in workshops and for tunnel rescue trains. So far there is only a short text for this vehicle. In the future it will be described in more detail.

In order to be able to operate the existing narrow-gauge railways more efficiently, SGP developed a diesel locomotive to replace steam locomotives. It had a box shape and two driver's cabs like standard-gauge diesel locomotives and was correspondingly smaller with a 600 hp engine. The power was transferred to the outer axles via a Voith gearbox and then passed on to the inner axles via coupling rods. Only the first three locomotives were equipped with a train heater, because ultimately all passenger cars got their own heater. To this day, about ten of the 15 locomotives are still in use on various narrow gauge railways. So far there is only a short text for this vehicle. In the future it will be described in more detail.

While the class 2043 diesel locomotives were built by Jenbacher, the class 2143 was built by SGP. Like the sister locomotives, they had a 1,500 hp engine and hydraulic power transmission from Voith. All locomotives were given electric train heating, from number 34 onwards there were also multiple controls and an increased top speed. The first retirements took place when the class 2016 “Hercules” (Siemens ER20) was delivered. The last 2143 was retired from ÖBB in March 2022. Some locomotives were sold to private customers and some were modernized or fitted with new Caterpillar engines. So far there is only a short text for this vehicle. In the future it will be described in more detail.
