The V 90 is a development of the V 100 for shunting service. It was lengthened, weighed down to an axle load of 20 tonnes and given a shorter gear ratio. The so-called “Bergfunk” (“mountain radio”) was developed after a short time, with which the locomotives could be controlled on the hump from a central computer. A portable radio remote control for the switch man was added in the 1990s. Depending on the system installed, the locomotives became class 290, 294 or 296. Since 2003, the locomotives with worn engines have been equipped with a more powerful MTU engine that is more economical.
