The Di 2 was a three-axle diesel shunter designed by MaK in Germany for the Norwegian State Railways. They were based on the two MaK 575 C built for the Stockholm-Nynäs-Järnväg AB in 1951. As the name suggests, they had a 575 hp engine from MaK and the “C” stood for three axles. Three Di 2 were each built in 1954 and 1957 by Mak and two more in 1961 by Thunes in Norway. Until 1973, 46 more were built by Thunes which had a 600 hp engine from BMV.
They were not only used for shunting, but also for an occasional freight or passenger train over short distances. One thing that led to increased wear was the long rigid wheelbase of 4,400 mm with axles connected by coupling rods. Withdrawals already started in 1981 due to the high noise level and insufficient comfort for the driver. In 1999, all had been withdrawn from regular service. But while most were scrapped, some came to NSB Berging og Beredskap for use in maintenance trains.
