To replace older diesel-hydraulic locomotives, JR Freight has received the first prototype of the DD200 in 2017. This was a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive with a modern 1,200 hp diesel engine that had the same axle load as the previous six-axle types. Some of the traction equipment came from the DF200. The first production locomotive was delivered in 2019 and by late 2021, 20 had been delivered. They are not only used for shunting, but also for hauling freight trains on non-electrified stretches. Also JR Kyushu and some private operators have ordered these locomotives.
