The RENFE series 592 is a three-car diesel multiple unit for service on suburban and secondary lines. Each set consists of two power cars and a trailer in the middle. Each power car has a diesel engine that powers the inner axle of each bogie via hydraulic transmission. In the trailer, there is an additional diesel engine responsible for power supply of the passenger compartments.

Between 1981 and 1984, MACOSA and Ateinsa built 70 sets of the series 592 with MAN engines. At the same time, CAF and Babcock & Wilcox built 63 similar sets of the series 593 with FIAT engines. Five sets of the series 592 were rebuilt for longer-range services with more powerful engines, no trailer and a top speed of 140 km/h. These were designated series 592.2. The Portuguese CP leased 17 sets since 2011. By the end of 2025, they are scheduled to be replaced by the Stadler FLIRT.
