The M 262.0 was a diesel-electric railcar built between 1948 and 1960 for faster services. It stood on two two-axle bogies and had a 410 hp V12 diesel engine. Due to the sound of the engine, they got the nickname “sewing machine”. Power was transmitted to two 130 kW (177 hp) traction motors which were located in one bogie. The first 52 had been built by Královopolská and the other 198 by Vagonka Tatra Studénka.
After 140 vehicles, some changes visible on the exterior included a more rounded roof and a smaller central window at the fronts. Additionally, the cabs now had side doors which were not present on the earlier batches. They now received the additional nickname “Kredenc” (serving cabinet). In 1988, the M 262.0 became the class 830. Some were re-engined in the eighties with a new six-cylinder engine and became the M 262.1 and later class 831. All were withdrawn by 2008, but a two-digit number is being preserved.
