In the fifties, the ÖBB needed a powerful electric express locomotive for speeds of 120 km/h. 20 of the new class 1010 were built by SGP between 1955 and 1958. They had six axles, an hourly output of 4,000 kW and a top speed of 130 km/h. They were based on the four-axle classes 1040 and 1041 and were built in parallel to the slower, six-axle class 1110. For several decades they were a mainstay of express traffic, but were retired by 2003 after the Taurus had been introduced. Nine have been preserved.
