The Shinkansen class 911 consisted of three diesel-hydraulic locomotives which were designed to tow broken-down Shinkansen bullet trains. It was based on the DD51 freight locomotive, but was built for standard gauge and got a streamlined body with two cabs. Here also the center bogie was powered. It had the same two engines as the DD51, which had 1,000 hp each in the prototype and 1,100 hp each in the two following locomotives. To tow trains on the high speed lines, they got two-stage gearboxes that allowed to switch the top speed between 92 and 160 km/h. In reality, they never rescued a Shinkansen and were only used for “Doctor Yellow” inspection trains until their scrapping in 1995.
