One part of a huge contract from Transnet Freight Rail for the construction of 1,064 modern locomotives is the class 44-000 diesel-electric locomotive. Designated ES40ACi by General Electric, it is part of the Evolution Series and in contrast to the class 43-000, it is no standard model and was specifically designed for TFR. After the first six were completely manufactured by GE at Erie, the following 227 were assembled by TFR at their Koedoespoort shops in Pretoria. The GEVO-12 prime mover and other notable equipment was still built in the USA.
