Locomotive Magazine, August 1914

The last design of 0-6-0 goods locomotives built for the Furness Railway was classified D5 by Bob Rush. They had been designed by W.F. Pettigrew and used the same boiler and the same 18 by 26 inch cylinders as the class 94 (L4) “Improved Cleator Tanks” and the class 130 (K4) 4-4-0. The first six were built by North British in 1913 and 1914. These were followed by four from Kitson in 1918 and nine more from North British between 1918 and 1920. The first two had gotten the numbers 1 and 2, while the others were numbered 19 to 35. The LMS inherited all in 1923 and numbered them 12494 to 12512. 13 were withdrawn between 1930 and 1935, but the other six came to British Railways in 1948. There their running numbers were increased by 40000. 52508 already quit service in 1950, but the other five only followed in 1956 and 1957.
