The class 2441 consisted of 60 0-6-0T side tank locomotives which were designed by Samuel Waite Johnson for mixed traffic. Johnson used the same boiler with a round-topped firebox as he had used for his 0-4-4T. The first 20 received a condenser for goods service around Blackfriars in London. In total, 60 had been built by Vulcan Foundry by 1902. In 1918, Henry Fowler equipped them with new boilers with a Belpaire firebox. Six years later, he used the class 2441 as basis for the 3F “Jinty” that had a smaller boiler, but is often credited to have reached 60 mph or 97 km/h.
Originally numbered 2441 to 2460 and 2741 to 2780, they were renumbered to 1900 to 1959 in 1907. The LMS assigned them to power class 3F and renumbered them in the 7200 range in 1934. British Railways took over all 60 in 1948 and put a 4 in front of their numbers. The first two were withdrawn in 1954, but it took until 1966 until all were gone.
