Metro-Cammell multiple units had recently been procured for the suburban routes around Hong Kong. From 2001, the first trains of a new generation were delivered under the name “Millennium Train”, which had now been built by a Japanese consortium. These have a streamlined head shape and are formed in units of four to twelve cars. The interior is designed in such a way that as many standing places as possible are available at the expense of seats. They have transformers on the roof for operation under 25,000 volts AC. The equipment for the urban lines with 1,500 volts DC could also have been retrofitted if necessary.
