One part of a huge contract from Transnet Freight Rail for the construction of 1,064 modern locomotives is the class 22E electric locomotive. Only the first one was built in China by CSR Zhouzhou, while the other 358 were built by Transnet Engineering at their Koedoespoort plant. Like the class 23E designed by Bombardier, they are six-axle freight locomotives with a single cab and dual-system capability for 25 kV AC and 3 kV DC. Changing between both systems is being accomplished automatically with the help of track magnets. In contrast to the 23E, the output of the 22E is 800 kW higher.
