To further accelerate conventional passenger services, CRRC Dalian started production of the HXD3D in 2012. This is a six-axle locomotive for heavy passenger trains with a continuous output of 7,200 kW and a top speed of 160 km/h. In contrast to earlier Chinese passenger locomotives, it can provide electrical power to its train, but if needed it has also enough pulling power for freight trains. Its design is based on the HXD3B that was produced by Bombardier and is part of the TRAXX family. Since 2012, more than 700 HDX3D have been produced.
