The E.402B was the successor to the E.402A that was also suited for service under 25 kV AC and could be distinguished by a more streamlined body design. Its top speed was reduced from 220 to 200 km/h and the hourly output remained the same, but the continuous output had been increased. Of 80 locomotives built, 20 can also run under 1.5 kV in France with reduced power and are designated E.402BF. Usually Trenitalia uses them in intercity service, but sometimes also for freight trains.
