The class 400 of the South Australian Railways was a “Double Mountain” Garratt locomotive built for heavy ore traffic. Ten were built by Franco-Belge under license in 1952 and 1953. The East African Railways class 60 built in 1953 and 1954 was nearly identical. It took only until 1963 for all SAR class 400 locomotives to be stored due to the introduction of diesel locomotives. However, some diesel locomotives were converted to standard gauge. The gaps they left were filled with class 400 Garratts which returned to service for this reason in 1969. Today, only 402 and 409 are being preserved with both on static display.
