Alstom Coradia Nordic

Two SL X60 in Stockholm
Two SL X60 in Stockholm
Hugh Llewelyn

For use in the colder regions of Europe, Alstom developed the Coradia Nordic multiple unit, which has so far only been used in Sweden under the designations X60, X61 and X62. They are the first production vehicles in the LIREX family and formed the basis for the Coradia Continental, which is being used in Germany as class 440. Both are manufactured in Salzgitter.

The X60 is the basic model that was ordered for the Pendeltåg of Storstockholms Lokaltrafik to replace the old X1 and X10 series trains. A trainset consists of six cars, each two of which are supported on a common Jakobs bogie. Of the seven bogies, six are powered with an output of 250 kW per axle, resulting in a total of 3,000 kW. As with the LIREX, almost the entire power train is located on the roof, except for the traction motors. In the SL, two trains are usually coupled together, resulting in a total of 748 seats and 1,130 standing places. After 71 trains of the first series, the SL procured 12 more as X60A in 2012 and 46 more as X60B in 2016. While the X60A doesn't have any significant differences, the X60B has countless small improvements and the new European train management system ERMTS.

For regional traffic, other operators ordered a total of 151 X61 and X62, each consisting of four cars. The largest part is used by Skånetrafiken, where 99 X61 replaced the former 49 X11 and are providing additional services. The interior of the vehicles is generally somewhat more generous and they are powered on four of the five bogies, which results in 2,000 kW. 18 additional X61 are operated by Östgötatrafiken and 22 by Västtrafik. The X62 are used in 12 examples at Norrtåg in northern regions of Sweden. The different designation can be explained by the top speed set at 180 km/h and the bistro compartment, which cannot be found on the other trains.

The second production vehicle from the LIREX family is the Coradia Continental, which was developed directly from the Coradia Nordic and is intended for use in Central Europe. Like the predecessor, these trains are also built in Salzgitter in the former Linke-Hoffmann-Busch works. These trains can be recognized visually by the straight side walls, which were necessary due to the narrower loading gauge in Central Europe compared to Sweden. The end cars were initially available in two different lengths, with the longer version having an additional crumple zone. This original head shape earned the trains the nickname “Pug Face”. Since the new crash standards came into force, a head shape with a different design has been manufactured and the trains have since been classified as the class 1440.

As with the predecessors, almost all of the propulsion technology, apart from the traction motors, is on the roof. While the transformers and power converters can be found on the end cars, the pantographs and various auxiliary units are on the intermediate cars. Three-, four- and five-car trains are available, in which three or four bogies are powered with 250 kW continuous power per axle. In the four-car classes 440.0 and 440.1, four of the five bogies are powered, and in the five-car 440.2, four of the six bogies are powered. The classes 440.3 and 440.4 are available as three-car sets, in which three and all of the four bogies are powered, respectively. The same applies to the variants of the class 1440, except that there is no 1440.4.

As with many modern new acquisitions, there were many teething problems, software problems and delivery delays in the early stages. Up until 2017, the Coradia Continental was conspicuous by excessive signs of wear affecting the traction motors and wheelsets. A total of 380 trains had been ordered by mid-2020, most of them from DB Regio. There they are used in the S-Bahn networks of Rhine-Ruhr, Nuremberg and in Breisgau, as well as in various other regions as regional express or regional trains. Other operators are NordWestBahn, agilis, Metronom, Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen and Hessische Landesbahn.

In the eighties, the Belgian State Railways had 140 type AM 80 multiple units built for passenger transport at speeds of up to 160 km/h. They initially consisted of a motor car with all axles powered and a control car. The automatic couplers are only compatible with other vehicles of the same type, but allow up to six motor cars to be combined. In order to increase the capacity, additional trailers were added from 1992 and the power was increased a little. The trains are not only used in intercity and interregio traffic, but also as regular passenger trains. Even after modernization from 2009, the vehicles do not have air conditioning, which is why they have not been in high-quality service since then.
