The five locomotives of the type C I were the first six-coupled locomotives in Bavaria. They had been specifically designed for the famous incline named the “Schiefe Ebene” on the line between Bamberg and Hof with a maximum of 2.5 percent. Production started in 1847 when the line was still under construction. After assisting on the construction site, they were used as helpers on the incline.
The second driving axle had no wheel flanges. To increase adhesive weight, they had a ballast tank on top of the boiler that could find a place thanks to the absence of a steam dome. In the result, they could haul 110 tonnes with 15.3 km/h on the steepest part of the Schiefe Ebene. Withdrawals were between 1885 and 1896.
