The series 328 was a 4-6-0 express locomotive based on the series 327. Since the predecessor had little over ten tonnes resting on each bogie axle, the bogie was moved to the back to carry more load, allowing to install a larger boiler. Now the second driving axle was driven to avoid too short connecting rods. It had a Brotan boiler and a smoke consuming device.
Although the shorter wheelbase had an adverse effect on the running characteristics at speed, the 328 was more powerful than the 327. On the level it could haul 277 tonnes at its top speed of 100 km/h. On an incline of one percent, it could reach 60 km/h with 229 tonnes.
The first two locomotives which had been completed in 1919 were seized by the Romanians and put into service by the CFR. 56 more built by MÁVAG came to the MÁV as intended. 100 more had been delivered by Henschel when production was completed in 1922. 17 had been sold to the ČSD, which retired them in the late fifties. In Hungary, the last one was retired in 1973 and today, only 328.054 is being preserved at Budapest.
